Cheserek posts Saint Leo record in Paul Short Run 8K

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Saint Leo freshman Ronald Cheserek set a new Saint Leo 8K record with a time of 24:23 in the men's College Gold race at Saturday's 43rd Annual Lehigh University Paul Short Run 8k, presented by ASICS, held at Lehigh's Goodman Campus.

Cheserek's 8K time on Saturday was 19 seconds faster than the previous Saint Leo record of 24:42.4, set by Niclas Bez in USC-Beaufort's Sand Shark Invitational in 2014. Cheserek finished 46th overall, 45th in points, in Saturday's Paul Short Run College Gold race.

Senior Rafal Matuszczak was second among Saint Leo finishers with a time of 24:52, which goes into Saint Leo's all-time records as the fourth-fastest time in program history, including Cheserek's time. Matuszczak was 107th overall, 99th in points.

Junior Anthony Deleva was 228th overall, 199th in points, with a time of 25:42, with Bez crossing the line 269th overall, 227th in points, with a time of 26:02. Junior Joe Fuller was the fifth Lion across the line with a time of 26:45, good enough for 319th overall, 257th in points.

Adam Urbaniak (27:20, 331st) and Chris Cabret (27:46, 335th) rounded out the list of Saint Leo finishers.

"I'm very excited with the way the men race today," said Kent Reiber, Saint Leo head cross country coach. "We had discussed closing the gap and running as a team for the past couple weeks. Although the gap isn't quite where we want it, they still competed and performed well. Ronald was running 10th with one mile to go, but cramped up a little in the last mile. Both the upperclassmen who were here last year and those who were not all performed well and above my expectations; they were all running close to or better than their lifetime bests."

"There is still more work to do moving forward, but we are in a good position only 21 days out from our conference meet," added Reiber.

As a team, Saint Leo placed 32nd out of 38 teams in the largely Division I College Gold race. Iona College won the College Gold 8K event, followed by Georgetown in second place and Division II Adams State (Colo.) finishing third.

Saint Leo men's cross country will race on its home course next weekend when the Lions host the Saint Leo Division II National Preview on Saturday, Oct. 8, at The Abbey Golf Course. The women's race will take place at 8:00 a.m.
