Cheserek paces the field to win UF Mountain Dew Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Saint Leo freshman Ronald Cheserek crossed the finish line ahead of 206 other runners to take overall first place at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Invitational, Saturday morning at UF's Mark Bostick Golf Course.

Cheserek finished the 8K race in 24:43.02, just shy of Niclas Bez's Saint Leo 8K record time of 24:42.4. There was 18 seconds of separation between Cheserek and the next closest finisher, former UF standout Eddie Garcia (25:01.52).

Saint Leo placed five runners among the top 35 non-Division I runners and edged Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for the non-DI team title.

Anthony Deleva was sixth overall, third on points, with a time of 26:17.82 on the challenging and slick UF course. Joe Fuller was 22nd overall and 12th on points with a time of 27:25.02. Allen Keister crossed in a time of 27:52.34 and was 31st overall, 20th on points, with Adam Urbaniak rounding out Saint Leo's list of scoring runners with a time of 27:52.52 to finish 32nd overall, 21st on points.

Chris Cabret (28:32.19, 42nd/30 points) and Ilio Sanchez (29:08.85, 57th/38 points) were the pushers for Saint Leo.

Eric Hermes (29:14.23, 61st) rounded out the list of finishers for Saint Leo.

The Lions finished with 57 points to win UF's signature cross country event for the first time in program history. SCAD was second with 68 points, while Flagler College was right behind with 69 points. Florida Tech was fourth with 74 points, with Embry-Riddle in fifth with 126.

Saint Leo returns to competition next Saturday, Oct. 1, when the Lions travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to compete in the Lehigh University Paul Short Run.
