Women’s XC takes top spot in South; men’s XC holds at No. 5

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's cross country team climbed into the top spot in the South Region in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional rankings, unveiled Tuesday.

Saint Leo climbed from second – it's placement in the preseason regional rankings – up to first in the South Region after taking first place in the Florida Tech Invitational last Saturday. The Lions finished ahead of Tampa, ranked fourth in the South Region, by 22 points. Saint Leo junior Colett Rampf won the event with a time of 17:59.52, and led a trio of Lion runners who were among the top 10.

Lee University (Tenn.) fell to the No. 2 spot in the women's regional rankings, while Union (Tenn.), Tampa, and Alabama-Huntsville rounded out the top five.

The Saint Leo men's cross country team held onto its No. 5 position in the South Region ranking, despite a strong showing at the Florida Tech Invitational. The Lions finished second in the field of 11 teams with 60 points, and trailed only event champion Florida Southern with 49 points.

Lee (Tenn.) sits atop the South Region men's rankings, followed by Alabama-Huntsville, Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern, and Saint Leo.

Saint Leo cross country is idle from competition this week, but returns to the course on Saturday, Sept. 24, when the Lions travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the UF Mountain Dew Invitational.
