Cheserek tabbed as SSC MXC Runner of the Week

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's cross country runner Ron Cheserek completed an impressive first week of his collegiate career by taking Sunshine State Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors, for the week ending September 11, 2016.

Cheserek, a true freshman from Kitale, Kenya, won the Florida Tech Invitational 8K on Saturday in Melbourne, Fla.  On the same Wickham Park course that will host the SSC Championship this October, Cheserek crossed the line in 25:08.27, and led Saint Leo to a second-place finish in a field of 11 teams.

Cheserek's time was just over eight seconds faster than his nearest competitor, Florida Southern runner Bobby Ormsby. Ormsby, who redshirted the 2015 season, finished third at both the SSC Championship and the NCAA South Region Championship in 2014.

As a team, Saint Leo men's cross country finished second out of 11 teams at the Florida Tech Invitational, just 11 points behind first-place Florida Southern.

The Lions return to competition on Saturday, Sept. 24, when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to race in the Florida Mountain Dew Invitational 5K event.
