Lions Headed for NCAA South Region

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The runners that will be participating in the NCAA South Region Championship run on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 were announced Wednesday from the Saint Leo University Marion Bowman Activities Center.

As they prepare to head to Sharon Johnston Park in Huntsville, Ala., 14 Lions look to finish higher than their current rankings. At this time, the men are ranked 10th, while the women recently rose to the 9th position.

Seven members from both the women's and men's teams will be racing in the meet, as both teams bring talent, hard work, and the will to win to the track in this year's South Region championship.

For the women, seniors Jillian Browne and Kelsey Bradley will bring their talents to the race, along with junior runners Lee Ann Antuna, Andrea Maxwell, and Elyse Snyder. The freshman duo of Kylie Fagan and Shelby Adams will also participate, making their first appearance in regional competition.

The women are a legitimate threat on the course in 2012, as multiple runners have achieved new personal bests and climbed up the all-time records list.

For the men, junior Brian Haynes and freshman standouts Carl Dunne and Valentin Lenz will accompany senior Eric Dirth in the last regional race of Dirth's career. Newcomers Spencer Mathis, Steven Brown, and David Hill will also appear for the first time in regional competition.

Saint Leo currently owns the ninth spot in the latest south region poll, a position they've held a handful of times during the regular season. In their first 10K of the season, the Lions look to make Saint Leo a significant player in the final results.

In addition, Dunne, the Lions' standout freshman runner, comes into the race with the fastest 8K time in program history, achieved on Sep. 15 at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Invite. Dunne also has his name in the record books for the 5th-best, 6th-best, and 8th-best 8K program times.

After the race, awards will be presented at the finish line for the top-15 competitors on each side. Race times still have yet to be determined, so stay current with for news, updates, and information on the men's and women's cross country team.
