Lions Close Out Regular Season with Strong Showing in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's cross country team battled through heavy rains to finish 20th (561 pts.) at the 2011 Walt Disney World Classic 8K, Saturday morning from the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista.

It marked the final regular season run for the squad as they now begin preparations for the 2011 Sunshine State Conference Championships.

Drake finished as the top school in the 24-team competition, closing the race with 31 points. Meanwhile, Florida A&M's Shauib Winters won individual honors with a pace of 25:10.18.

For the Lions, it was the legs of Michael Berry that led. He finished the distance course in a time 28:49.22 and claimed a spot inside the top-100 in the 214-person field.

David Malys displayed a strong finish as he concluded the run just seconds behind his teammate at 29:02.07.

Eric Dirth was the third and final Lion to crack the 30-minute mark as he registered a final time of 29:18.27.

From there, Saint Leo saw the final four members of their team cross the line all within a minute of each other. Connor Callahan was first of the quartet to finish as he closed with a finishing time of 31:05.96. Kevin Papac followed Callahan with a closing time of 31:22.16, while Justin Prenganman and Matthew Urbaniak bookended the Lions' team effort.

The Lions will return to course on Saturday, October 22, when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to compete in the SSC Championships. The race is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. and is hosted by Nova Southeastern University. Stay current with for news, updates, and information on the men's cross country team.
