Men's Cross Country Opens Season with 10th-Place Finish at Early Bird Classic

TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's cross country team gathered a team score of 272 points en route to a 10th-place finish at the Early Bird Classic (Hosted by the University of Tampa), Friday evening from Dover Park.

Jon Norris paced the Lions with a solid opening-meet time of 21:38 and a 45th-place finish at the four-mile event.

Of the next 50 to complete the run, the Lions saw the remaining seven members of the squad cross the tape, including Bryan Haynes who finished 59th in the 140-person field with a time of 22:05.

Michael Berry completed his run six seconds off of Haynes' finish, while David Malys and freshmen newcomers Jeff Van Natter and Connor Callahan saw closing times with the top-100.

Junior Eric Dirth also ran a consistent race as he finished in the top half of the field with a time of 22:16. 

Meanwhile, Kevin Papac and Justin Prengaman solidified the team effort with times of 24:27 and 25:00.  

The Lions will return to the course next Friday, September 9, when they travel to Tampa, Fla. to compete in the USF Invitational at The Claw at USF Golf Course.
