Matuszczak finishes third in 3,000-meter steeplechase; Maxwell seventh in 1,500 meters
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's and women's track and field team's travelled east on Interstate-4 on Friday to take part in the two-day Embry Riddle Spike's Classic at the ERAU Track Complex in Daytona Beach. The Lions had a solid showing with seven athletes finishing in the top 10 of their events during day one.
Niclas Bez highlighted the day's competition for the Lions winning the men's 1,500-meter run in a time of 3:57.63, more than two seconds in front of the second place finisher.
Rafal Matuszczak also had an impressive showing, taking third in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Other top 10 finishers in the men's events were: James Mullin (4:04.03) and Carl Dunne (4:04.24) taking ninth and 10th, respectively in the 1,500-meter run, and Valentin Lenz (15:40.18) eighth in the 5,000-meter run.
Additional competitors for Saint Leo on the afternoon, were, in the 1,500-meters, Stephen Brown (4:09.93) finishing 18th, Patrick Hill (4:23.59) taking 25th, Adam Urbanik (4:31.08) finishing 30th, and Matthew Basin (5:00.22) rounding out the group in 39th.
In the 5,000-meters, Kyle Vanburen (17:01.14) took 25th while David Hill (17:41.61) and Kevin Papac (17:50.39) finished in 27th and 28th, respectively.
David Gardner was Saint Leo's lone competitor in the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter dash. Gardner would take 48th in the 200 with a time of 24.62, and 50th in the 100-meters in 18.84.
Andrea Maxwell turned in the best showing on the women's side posting a seventh place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:55.28.
Anet Milian ran a 20:10.59 in the women's 5,000-meter run which was good enough for ninth place.
Also running in the 1,500-meters was Grace Lederer finishing 26th in a time of 5:23.88, and Allison Knipe posting a time of 6:10.57 and taking 35th.
The Lions will return to the track on Saturday, April 5 in the second day of competition at the Spike's Classic.
