Track Opens Season with Strong Showing at Jimmy Carnes Invitational
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's and women's track teams opened up their 2014 campaign with a strong performance at the seventh annual Jimmy Carnes Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Friday evening, with three program records set in just their first meet of the season. Current program records were recorded in previous years of off-season cross country competition at spring track events.
Freshman Jelena Tancic kicked things off with a fifth place finish in the 1 Mile Run, crossing the finish line with a time of 5:11.55, beating a previous school record of 6:22.33 held by Mariah Moss at the Embry Riddle Last Chance Meet on February 20, 2010.
Natalie McCormick and Shelby Adams finished the mile in 21 and 27, respectively, earning times of 5:38.06 and 6:03.43.
The 800 Meter came next, with Andrea Maxwell pulling in a fifth place performance with a time of 2:24.10. Kylie Fagan crossed the tape in 2:43.54, good for 18th overall, while Anet Milian came in with a time of 2:55.99, for 21st place.
James Mullin led the way for the men's team in the 800 Meter, crossing with a time of 2:05.34 and earning 12th place overall. David Gardner finished 19th with a time of 2:09.48, while Patrick Hill finished in 2:16.12 for a 25th place finish.
Three Lions participated in the men's 3000 Meter event, led by Steven Brown with a time of 10:10.98. Adam Urbaniak was one spot behind Brown, finishing in 24th with a time of 10:17.94, while Matthew Basin finished in 11:06.44, good for 27th.
The Green and Gold wrapped up their first meet of the season with two new program bests in the Distance Medley Relay. The women's foursome of Tancic, Maxwell, Fagan, and McCormick finished in second place with a program best time of 12:27.14. The men's team followed next as the combination of Mullin, Gardner, Hill, and Brown finished with a record time of 11:43.83, good for third overall.
The Saint Leo men's and women's track teams will return to action on Saturday, January 25, when they travel to Daytona, Fla. to participate in the Embry Riddle Challenge at the ERAU Track Facility.
