Men’s tennis prepares for NCAA tournament play

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's tennis will open its 2017 NCAA tournament run on Saturday afternoon, April 28, at 2:00 p.m. EST when the Lions face Sunshine State Conference rival Lynn University, at the South Region I site in Pensacola, Fla.

Fifth-seeded Saint Leo and fourth-seeded Lynn will be more than just a little familiar with each other.

The Lions and the Fighting Knights met in Saint Leo's regular season finale, which Saint Leo won, 5-4. The two teams met again in the SSC Tournament semifinals, with Lynn coming out ahead, 5-4, after three of the singles matches went to three sets – and one of those to a tiebreaker.

That will make Saturday's meeting at the University of West Florida's Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex the third match between the two over the last 15 days.

Saint Leo enters the South Region championship with a 13-4 record, and finished second in the SSC with a 6-1 mark. Lynn boasts a 19-5 mark with a 5-2 SSC record. The winner will advance to play the winner of the other South Region I match – no. 1 seed West Florida vs. no. 8 seed Benedict College – on Sunday, April 30, at 10:00 a.m.

The winner of the South Region I, along with the winner of the South Region II bracket (Barry, North Alabama, Valdosta State, Rollins College) will advance to the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship on May 9 in Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
