Men's tennis tops Eckerd, 8-1

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 2 Saint Leo men's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season, and 2-0 in Sunshine State Conference action after an 8-1 victory over Eckerd on Thursday afternoon.

Following a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Lions would go on to sweep the singles matches.

In doubles play, the No. 1 pair of Thomas Grinberg and Vincent Suillerot swept Victor Appelqvist and Alasdair Knox, 8-0.

Francisco Aparicio and Charles Benet added the second point for the Lions, taking down Eddie Lewis and Connor Masella, 8-6, in No. 3 flight.

Eckerd claimed their lone point at No. 2 doubles when Will Stone and Matt Spasic topped Jaime Bueno and Oskar Nurmio, 9-8 (7-5), in a tiebreak showdown.

Bueno bounced back from his doubles defeat with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Stone at No. 3 flight. Aparicio added another sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Spasic at No. 4.

Grinberg took the No. 1 flight with a 6-0, 6-1 score over Appelqvist, while Suillerot added a win over Lewis at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Willem Van Den Akker took home No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 7-6 win, while Benet added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 flight.

The Lions return to action at No. 3 Armstrong State on Sunday, Feb. 19 for a 12 p.m. match.
