SAINT LEO, Fla. – In the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Rankings of the 2016-17 season, the Saint Leo men's tennis team found themselves at No. 1 in the South Region.

"The men's team had a tremendous season last year, finishing just one win short of their goal," said Head Coach Chad Berryhill. "To start out ranked No. 1 in the South is a tremendous honor and we will have to be up to the challenge this spring to hold onto that ranking in the toughest region in the country. The guys definitely up for that challenge."

The squad is coming off the 2016 spring season that saw them as the NCAA National Runners-up after falling to Hawaii Pacific in the national championship match. They finished the season with a 27-2 record, both losses coming to HPU.

In the singles rankings, junior Jaime Bueno fell in at No. 20.

Bueno was joined with senior Oskar Nurmio at No. 3 in doubles rankings. In the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Regional Championships, hosted by Florida Southern this fall, Nurmio and Bueno went 4-1.

"I am excited for Jaime Bueno for his singles and doubles ranking. He has worked very hard to improve his tennis, and we expect big things from him this spring. Likewise for Oskar, who is a senior. We want to finish strong in his final season."

The Lions finished 2016 as the No. 2 team in the nation and held the No. 1 ranking in the South Region as well.

The ITA National Rankings will be released on Nov. 21.
