HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team opened its spring break trip with a 6-3 win over Erskine College on Wednesday morning in Hilton Head, S.C. The win advances Saint Leo to an overall record of 11-3, while Erskine drops to a mark of 1-12.
Saint Leo went 2-1 in doubles play to open the day, with the duo of Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio and Oskar Nurmio defeating Andre Andre and Robert Clarke, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Jason Harris and Wilson Mathewes brought Erskine even with the Lions, securing the win at No. 1 singles as they defeated Aloua Adjenak and Fons Verberne, 8-4, but Saint Leo secured the win at the No. 3 slot as Sam El Nehmani and Ismail Lemtouni took down Jack West and Alan Pearce, 8-6.
Pearce pulled the Flying Fleet even, 2-2, as he defeated El Nehmani, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, but Gonzalez-Tarrio gave Saint Leo the lead once again as he defeated Clarke 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 4 position.
Verberne extended the lead, taking down Andre 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, followed by Adjenak earning a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 slot to pull Saint Leo ahead, 5-2.
Lemtouni retired at the No. 3 slot, giving Mathewes the victory (6-4, 5-2 ret.) to pull Erskine to within two, 5-3, but Nurmio closed out the day with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Harris at No. 2 singles to secure the Lions' fourth straight win.
The Saint Leo men's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, March 20, when they take on Bloomsburg in Hilton Head, S.C.
