Eighth-Ranked Lions Unable to Joust Fourth-Ranked Fighting Knights in 8-1 Loss
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team was unable to topple the fourth-ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights on Sunday afternoon at the Perper Tennis Complex, falling to their conference foe by a score of 8-1.
The loss marks the Lions' first of the season, and drops them to a record of 3-1, while the win keeps Lynn perfect on the season with a mark of 5-0.
The Lynn tandem of Alessio Iannozzi and Pavel Mojha took down Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier next at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-6, followed by anoter 8-6 decision in Lynn's favor at the No. 2 slot as Ismail Lemtouni and Bruno Sisti fell to Vlad Cirla and Roman Turtygin to close out doubles play with Lynn holding onto a 2-1 advantage.
The Lions found themselves at the bottom end of a clean sweep at singles, helping Lynn pick up the 8-1 victory.
No. 17 Cirla defeated Sisti at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, followed by a 7-6, 6-3 victory by Riggs over Adjenak at the No. 2 slot. Tomas Porkop defeated Nicholson-Lewis next, earning the win at No. 3 singles by a tally of 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, followed by a victory at the No. 5 slot as Iannozzi took down Lozier, 6-2, 6-1.
The Fighting Knights closed out the day with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 as Volpicelli defeated No. 50 Lemtouni, and a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 as 36th-ranked Mojah took down Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio to close out the afternoon.
The Saint Leo men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, February 22, when they host Barry University at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
