No.18 Men’s Tennis Edged by No.2 Barry, 5-4

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No.18-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team (2-2, 0-1 SSC) dropped a narrow decision to Sunshine State Conference foe, Barry University (4-0, 2-0 SSC), 5-4, Saturday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.

The Lions pounced on the Buccaneers during doubles as they took wins at the top flight position and No.2 doubles. Unfortunately, four wins by Barry on the singles side gave the Buccaneers the slim win.

The Lions immediately made a statement as the No.21-ranked duo of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier breezed past the No.5 tandem of Mokrzycki/Schmidt, 8-1. In addition, the No.2 pair of Antonine Raffaelli and Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio bounced Vivas/Sigaud, 8-6.

On the singles side, the Lions expanded their lead as Lozier straight-set, 7-5, 2-0 (ret.), win over Schmidt gave Saint Leo a 3-1 lead. After dropping match at four-flight singles, the Lions made the lead 4-2 behind a consecutive sets win by Gonzalez-Tarrio over Sielman, 6-2, 6-4.

Despite the loss, Head Coach James Bryce was still excited, "I couldn't be more proud of a team for their efforts today. Our leadership and energy was incredible. We came up a bit short in the end, but we know now that we can compete at this level. I'm looking forward at seeing how we respond next week. Victor Lozier was great today and displayed his true qualities as a leader."

The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, February 14, when they host the Eckerd Tritons in a non-conference showdown. First serve is set for 3 p.m. from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
