No.18 Men's Tennis Opens Season with Loss to No.3 Armstrong Atlantic
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The No. 18-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team (0-1) fell in its season opener to the No. 3-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University Pirates (1-0), 9-0, Thursday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
Despite falling 3-0 in a trio contested doubles contests, the Lions tested the Pirates singles skills before dropping their match with the perennial national contender in straight sets.
In a hotly contested doubles showdown, each of the three matches featured at least four points. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Pirates pulled out narrow victories in each, including an 8-6 win by Mikk Irdoja and Daniel Regan over Jake Fleischer and Aloua Adjenak.
On the singles side, the Lions tested the national contenders as three opponents tallied at least three points in the second set. Highlighting the singles portion was the No.6 slot of Jose Morales as he battled back from a 6-1 first set defeat only to be nipped by the No.23 ranked Jean-Michel Blouin, 6-5.
On the match, Head Coach James Bryce stated, "We fought hard throughout the entire match and I am proud of their effort. I feel this kind of competition will only help us as we continue our season."
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, February 4, when they host regional foe Palm Beach Atlantic University. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
