SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s tennis team (4-16, 0-6 SSC) dropped a heartbreak 5-4 decision to the Eckerd College Tritons in the final regular season match of 2009 at the SLU Tennis Center, Thursday evening.

Despite winning two out of three matches in doubles play, the Lions let four of six singles matches slip through their hands in the Sunshine State Conference affair.

In doubles action, the Lions jumpstarted the afternoon with a pair of victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Yves Jacobs and Richard Machlachlan manned the No. 1 spot as they traded points with the Eckerd pair all match. In the end though, the Lions’ dup proved to be too much taking the match 9-7. After Andrew Sheets and Michael Calloway retired in their match, Diego Timoteo and Jose Morales made quick work of their opponents at the No. 3 spot winning impressively, 8-2

The Lions entered singles play with confidence having won two of three matches. However, just three match wins away from victory, the Lions were only able to secure two wins. After dropping matches at the No.1 and 2 slots, Timoteo bounced back to win a grueling three-set match with Alex Kleefield, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-4).

Anthony Carter then stepped up at No.5 singles to defeat Breen Eitel in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1). Saint Leo also had another three-set match, but  Morales found the short end of the stick at No. 4 singles falling in an exciting match, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6.

Saint Leo has not defeated Eckerd since April of 2007.

The Lions now wait seeding for the SSC Tournament which is set to begin on Thursday, April 16 from the McCusker Sports Center in Boca Raton, Fla. The Tournament is hosted by Lynn University. Stay up-to-date with for further information.
