SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s tennis team (4-15, 0-5 SSC) put up a valiant effort against the No. 14-ranked Rollins College Tars (12-7, 3-3 SSC), but fell 8-1 in Sunshine State Conference action Tuesday evening from the SLU Tennis Center.

Although being swept in doubles action, SLU scored six or more points in two of the three matches. The Tars continued their success taking five out of six singles matches.

The Lions and Tars battled through their three doubles matches, with the Tars coming out victorious in each match. Still, SLU did not go down quietly as the No. 1 doubles team of Yves Jacobs and Richard Maclachlan forced their match to go into a tiebreaker. Unfortunately the pair couldn’t overcome a quick start by the Rollins duo of Neil Clausen and Gustavo Carvalho in the extra set, falling 9-8 (7-3). Diego Timoteo and Jose Morales teamed at No. 3 doubles and put the Rollins pair of Nick Rowlands and Jon Emmet on the ropes. Their efforts still were not enough as the Tar tandem pulled away for an 8-6 victory.

Singles action did not go very well for the Green and Gold, dropping five of six matches. Morales proved to be the bright spot for the Lions as he battled back from a 6-0 first set defeat to win in super tiebreaker fashion. Morales turned the tables on Bill Rockwood in the second set, taking the win in dominating shutout. In the super tiebreaker the two exchanged points for the majority of the set, but Morales refused to let this match slip through fingers as he surged for the last few points and a 10-7 victory.

Next, the Lions will host the Eckerd College Tritons on Thursday, April 9 from the SLU Tennis Center. It also marks the final regular season match for the Lions before heading down to Boca Raton, Fla. for the SSC Tournament. First serve of the Thursday match-up is set for 3:00 pm.
