ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s tennis team (3-8) dropped their second consecutive match Saturday afternoon, falling to the Eckerd College Tritons on the road in non-conference action, 7-2.

The Lions missed out on multiple opportunities in doubles play, as they dropped two tiebreakers. Yves Jacobs and Richard Maclachlan battled their opponents point for point at the No. 1 doubles slot but could’t find the right touch at the end of the match as the Eckerd pair escaped with a 9-8 win. Pablo Chavez and Jose Morales fell into the same trap as their match went past the regulation eight points, as well. Unfortunately, the Saint Leo pair fell just a couple points short again as the Eckerd duo slid by with a 9-7 win.

Eckerd didn’t allow Saint Leo much breathing room in singles action either as they won four out of six matches. SLU’s two wins came from at the No. 3 and No. 5 singles spots, but by the time the Green and Gold were able to pick up their two wins the match had already been decided. Machlachlan ousted his opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 while Morales had to use to super tiebreaker to earn his hard fought three-set victory over JP Walker, 6-2, 2-6 (10-5).

The Lions look to stop their two-game skid this Monday, March 9 as they take on St. Cloud University from the friendly confines of the SLU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 3:00 pm
