SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s tennis team (3-7) couldn’t maintain their momentum from their 9-0 thumping of St. Joseph’s, as they fell 7-2 to the Bobcats of St. Thomas University at the SLU Tennis Center Thursday afternoon.
The Lions had a rough start to the day, as the Bobcats took two out of three matches in doubles action. Pablo Chavez and Jose Morales solidified an 8-5 victory over Bache and Fountain at No. 2 doubles to give the Lions their first point of the day.
Unfortunately, the Green and Gold couldn’t change things around in singles play as the Bobcats took five of the six matches, despite multiple Lions pushing their respective matches to three sets. Chavez was one of those three-set victims as he fell in the first set 6-4. He quickly rebounded to win the second set by the same score, but Escarte ultimately prevailed in the third and decisive set 6-3. Diego Timoteo fell in the manner and Anthony Carter lost a heartbreaking 11-9 super tie-breaker to Acevedo in the third and final set. The Lions lone win came from Jacobs, as he came up victorious in two very close sets, 6-4, 7-5.
The Lions look to rebound in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Saturday, March 7 as they travel to Eckerd College for a non-conference showdown with the Tritons. First serve is set for 12:00 pm.
