Lakeland, Fla. (April 18, 2008) – The Saint Leo men’s tennis team (3-16, 0-6 SSC) fell 5-3 to host school Eckerd College (3-12, 1-5 SSC) Friday afternoon in Lakeland, Fla., ending the 2008 season and the Lions' SSC Tournament.
The Lions dropped two of three matches in doubles competition. Triton duo of Ben Maxwell and Hisashi Sato squeaked by the Lions pair of Brandon Stacey (Sr., Galesburg, Ill.) and Saif Noorsumar (Sr., Karachi, Pakistan) 8-6 in the No. 1 position. The Tritons tandem of Colton Jacobs Breen Eitel extended the Eckerd College lead to 2-0, as they defeated the Lions duo of Ali El Naamani (Grad. Saida, Lebanon) and Diego Timoteo (So., Brazil) 8-1 in the No. 2 spot. The Lions jumped on the board, as a result of their doubles victory in the No. 3 position. The Lions team of Pablo Chavez (Fr., Margarita, Venezuela) and Michael Del Priore (Sr., Englewood, Fla.) rolled past the Triton team of William Holt Weeks and JP Walker 8-2.
Singles action did not fair much better for the Lions. Both the No.1 and No.2 position picked up early points for the Tritons as Maxwell defeated Chavez 7-5, 4-5, unfinished and Sato beat Stacey 6-3, 6-0. Saint Leo cut the lead in half as Noorsumar blew by Jacobs 6-3, 6-2. McDonald picked up the next point for the Tritons, as he defeated El Naamani in a tough two-set match 6-3, 7-5. Walker added the Tritons final point of the afternoon winning over Del Priore 6-3, 6-4. The final match of the afternoon and season for the Lions ended in a positive manner as Timoteo triumphed over Holt Weeks 6-0, 6-1.
