Lions Thwarted by Eighth-Ranked Tampa in 161-101 Loss
TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's swim team put up a valiant fight, but were unable to defeat the eighth-ranked University of Tampa Spartans on Saturday morning at the University of Tampa Aquatic Center.
Patrick Ceddia led the way for Saint Leo, earning two first place finishes on the morning. The senior took home the top slot in the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 9:52.06, and continued his success into the 500 yard Free event where he earned a time of 4:48.62.
Dylan Kasson finished behind Ceddia in the 500 Free, touching with a time of 4:54.96, good for second place. Kasson also earned a fourth place time of 1:48.17 in the 200 Yard Freestyle event, finishing behind Milton Alberto-Requejo who earned a third place time of 1:45.06.
Alberto-Requejo picked up a second place touch in the 100 Yard Free, hitting the wall with a time of 47.04.
Matheus Assis closed out the 50 Yard Free event with a first place time of 21:04, before moving on to pick up a second place touch in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a mark of 51.56.
Pawel Trenda took home first, second, and third place times on the morning. Trenda started his day with a third place time of 53.52 in the 100 Yard Backstroke, and followed with a second place performance in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a mark of 1:53.78. the Oswiecim, Poland native closed out his day with a top finish in the 200 Yard IM, earning a time of 1:57.30.
Other notable individual finishes on the day came from Vashaad Fincher, who picked up a second place finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, followed immediately by Jose De Jesus in third with a time of 1:02.42. McClellan Lowry took home third in the 200 Yard Butterfly, earning a time of 2:02.17.
The Lions opened the day with a second and third place showing in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The "A" squad of Trenda, Fincher, Assis, and Alberto-Requejo finished with a total time of 1:35.40, followed immediately by the combination of Rhet Rheinlander, De Jesus, Gabe Keown, and Ceddia with a time of 1:36.25.
To close out the meet, Saint Leo took home a first place time of 3:06.45 in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay thanks to top performances by Alberto-Requejo, Keown, Ceddia, and Assis.
The Lions return to the pool deck on Saturday, December 14, when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale, to participate in the four-day Nova Southeastern Invitational.
