Trenda and Assis Make a Splash on the All-Conference Men’s Swimming Team
Mar 21, 2013
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Saint Leo University's nationally recognized men's swimming tandem of Pawel Trenda and Matheus Assis received more accolades on Thursday as both were named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Men's Swim Team as it was announced by SSC Commissioner Jay Jones. Trenda also marked another program first as he was named the SSC's Freshman of the Year.
In addition to Trenda's award, Florida Southern's Jeb Halfacre and Nova Southeastern's Oskar Nordstrand were named Co-Swimmers of the Year. FSC's Duncan Sherrard was tabbed Coach of the Year.
In his debut season from Oswiecim, Poland, Trenda set new school records in six individual events and five relays. He won the 400 IM at the SSC Championship, touching the wall in a meet-record time of 3:52.96. Trenda would later set the overall SSC record in finishing third at the NCAA DII Championship with a time of 3:51.96 in the 400 IM. The newcomer also finished second at the SSC meet with a time of 1:48.42 in the 200 IM. Also named to the All-SSC Second Team he placed 12th at the NCAA Championship in the same event. Trenda also swam on the Lions' 400 Free Relay team that won the SSC Championship in a meet-record time of 2:57.97. In total, he scored in seven events at the Division II Championship, participating in four individual events and three relay races.
For Assis, his freshman season was solidified after his outstanding performance at the SSC Championships earned him the Conference's Men's Swimmer of the Meet honor. Earning first-team honors, Assis won all three of his individual swims as he broke four SSC meet records and two overall SSC records in the Conference Championships. He was also the lead-off leg to the 400 Free relay that broke the conference and overall SSC record. The native of Paraiba, Brazil also set a new conference and overall record in the 100 Free with a time of 44.14. The two-time SSC Swimmer of the Week set four NCAA 'A' Cut times and earned All-America honors at the National Championships. As with Trenda, Assis was a member of the SSC Champion 400 Free Relay team and scored in seven events at the National Tournament, helping the Lions to a 13th place finish.
Voting for the SSC Swimmer, Freshman, and Coach of the Year was recently conducted among the league's swimming coaches. The All-SSC Men's Swimming Team was determined by individual points accumulated at the SSC Swimming Championship, which was conducted Feb. 13-16 at the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla. The top eight swimmers, based on points, were named All-SSC First Team, and the next eight swimmers were named All-SSC Second Team.
