WINTER PARK, Fla. - Saint Leo freshman Matheus Assis has once again been named Sunshine State Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week presented by VALIC, it was announced Monday by SSC officials.
Assis, as native of Brazil, had a record-setting day in the No. 20 Lions' 147-115 upset over No. 11 Tampa. Assis won the 100-yard butterfly with a school-record time of 50.13. He also set a new program record in winning the 100-yard backstroke in 50.06. Both of those marks were the fastest in the SSC this season and achieved NCAA "B" standard qualifying times.
Assis continued his assault on the Lions' record books as part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team. Swimming the leadoff leg, Assis clocked a school-record 45.57 in his 100 yards to help Saint Leo win the event with a time of 3:03.82. His 100-yard leg achieved an NCAA "B" standard qualifying time for that distance.
Assis is the 12TH Saint Leo student-athlete to earn conference honors, and fourth men's swimmer.
Saint Leo will return to the pool on Saturday, November 29, whey travel to Savannah, Ga. to compete at the SCAD Invitational. The three day meet is scheduled to get underway at 8:00 a.m. from the Chatham County Aquatic Center.
