SAINT LEO, Fla. – Paul Mangen, head men's and women's swimming coach, has unveiled his team's 2012-13 schedule.
The line-up, which features 15 new student-athletes, will compete in 10 regular season meets, including three home contests. The men's roster features eight of those new swimmers, while the women welcome in seven swimmers.
"We have some difficult meets lined up this season," said Mangen. "Still, I feel we have been training hard and are doing what is necessary to make sure we can compete head-to-head which each of our opponent."
The Lions will open the season with a Sunshine State Conference showdown dual meet with foes Florida Tech and newcomer Lynn University (Oct. 13). The Panthers feature a bolstered line-up, as well as a new pool, while the Fighting Knights are new to the conference slate.
A week later, the Lions will make a trip to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to compete with national powerhouse Nova Southeastern (Oct. 20). Back-to-back SSC Champions, the Sharks feature a deep, talented, and disciplined squad.
"Swimming talented programs like NSU will allow us to be challenged," said Mangen. "Meets like this will push us to make the next step in our two program's development.
A trip to Winter Park, Fla. to swim against rival Rollins (Oct. 27) is next on the schedule. A growing rivalry, the two teams have finished next to each other in the standings the past three seasons, including a rare dual meet tie in 2011-12.
The Lions second home meet will occur on Nov.17 when rival the University of Tampa comes to the Bowman Center Pool. Taking down the Spartans a year ago, the Lions will look to defend their pool in the anticipated rematch.
The Lions will then travel to Savannah, Ga. to compete in the SCAD Invitational (Nov. 29). That four day meet will lead into a dual meet with Pfeiffer University (Dec. 31) and the Orange Bowl Classic as the Lions will join a host of other schools, including top-tier Division I, II, III and NAIA teams, at the Orange Bowl Classic (Jan. 3) in beautiful Key Largo, Fla.
Saint Leo will stay on the road for a re-match dual meet with Florida Tech and Lynn (Jan. 12), before returning home for a senior day rematch with the Rollins College Tars (Jan. 26).
The Sunshine State Conference Championships (hosted by Nova Southeastern) will occur from Feb. 13-16 from the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla., and the NCAA National Championships (Mar. 6-9) will cap off the 2012-13 year.
