Records Tumble as Saint Leo Shocks Nationally-Ranked Tampa, 151-111

TAMPA, Fla.  -  The Saint Leo men's swim team set four new program bests and matched another as they shocked the nationally-ranked University of Tampa Spartans, defeating them 151-111, Saturday morning at the University of Tampa Swimming Complex.

Sophomore Gabe Keown had a breakout day against the Green and Gold's cross-town rival, matching the program's top time (21.21) in the 50-Yard Freestyle, and crushing the 100-Yard Freestyle record, touching with a time of 45.59.

The Philadelphia, Pa. native was also a member of both the 200-Yard Medley Relay, and 400-Yard Freestyle Relay teams, both of which finished with top times and new program bests as they knocked their Sunshine State Conference opponent out of the water. 

The record-setting 200-Medley combo of Keown, Antonio Roki, Chris Canene, and Tim Olson finished two seconds faster than their adversary with a mark of 1:34.79, while the 400-Free Relay crew of Keown, Canene, Olson, and Michael Cozzi completed the Freestyle Relay four seconds faster than UT with a program best 3:05.19.

Along with his success in the 400-Free, Cozzi touched with a  time of 1:41.97 in the 200-Yard Freestyle event, marking a new program record and dominating the second place finisher from UT by six seconds.  The junior from East Hampton, Conn. also grabbed the top spot in the 500-Yard Freestyle (4:48.48), and earned a second place finish behind Keown in the 100-Free (47.77)

Also setting a new program best was Canene, claiming first in the 100-Yard Breaststroke as he touched at 57.84, with Derek Maddigan (1:00.09) and Carl Roycroft (1:00.41) claiming second and third, respectively.  Canene, a freshman from Naperville, Ill. also finished first in the 200-Yard Breaststroke (2:08.44), while Maddigan (2:08.82) and Roycroft (2:09.86) rounded out the top three once again.

Roycroft went on to claim the top spot in the 200-Yard Individual Medley, finishing two seconds faster than the second-place UT swimmer as he touched at 1:59.07.

Along with helping the 200-Medley Relay to a top finish, Roki picked up the top finish in the 200-Yard Backstroke, coming in at 1:57.29, two seconds faster than freshman Rhet Rheinlander (1:59.65).

Rheinlander picked up another top-three time, finishing third in the 100-Yard Backstroke with a time of 54.08, while Luigi Zenere came in second at 53.94.  Fellow freshman Kieran Advena also picked up a second place time, touching at 10:37.21 in the 1000-Yard Freestyle event, and later finished third in the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:07.55).

Rounding out the morning was Olson, who picked up two second-place finishes to go along with a top time in the 400-Free Relay.  The Land O'Lakes, Fla. native touched at 1:56.53 in the 200-Yard Butterfly, and went on to finish the 100-Yard Butterfly in 51.16 to help the Lions to their big victory.
