Swimming Sweeps Florida Tech in Sunshine State Conference Competition
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Bringing in top finishes in all 20 events, the Saint Leo University men's and women's swim teams swept opponent Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Bowman Center Pool. The men pulled in an overall score of 138-39, while the women swam away with a 140-27 overall tally.
The Lions pick up their second straight victory of the season, while Florida Tech notches a defeat in their first meet in program history.
The Lions opened the afternoon with a pair of wins in the 200-Yard Medley Relay, with the women's team of Allison Cary, Kristy Marquez, Chloe Pellican, and Kaitlyn Hite earning an overall time of 1:59.27. The men's relay team of Rhet Rheinlander, Mike Cozzi, Gabe Keown, and Carl Roycroft finished with a time of 1:39.24.
Marquez and Chris Canene rolled through the 200-Yard Free events, touching at 2:03.63, and 1:47.20, respectively. In the 50-Yard Freestyle, Maggie Walker finished with a time of 25.30. On the men's side, Keown sprinted to a 21.88 finish.
Sanda Stopzynska (1:02.91), and Tim Olson (54.43) earned the top slots in the 100-Yard Individual Medleys, while Pellican (1:02.76) and Keown (52.86) dominated the 100-Yard Butterfly events.
Walker blew her completion out of the water in the 100-Yard Free, touching eight seconds faster than her competition for a top spot finish of 55.61. Canene pulled out the win in the men's 100-Yard Freestyle, with a time of 48.36.
The 100-Yard Backstroke events saw Kaitlyn Hite in first with a time of 1:05.38, while Olson touched at 54.29 to claim the top slot.
Lindsay Albanese and Rhet Rheinlander claimed gold in the longest event of the afternoon. Albanese took home an overall time of 5:34.30 in the 500-Yard Freestyle, while Rheinlander completed the event with a time of 5:07.73.
Marquez (1:15.46) and Cozzi (1:01.48) hit the wall first in the 100-Yard Breaststroke events before the Lions claimed the top positions in the final event of the afternoon, the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay. The women's relay team of Cary, Stopzynska, Walker, and Muniz brought in an overall time of 1:44.95, with the men's squad of Canene, Cozzi, Olson, and Anotnio Roki earned a finish of 1:28.90.
