SARASOTA, Fla. – Both the Saint Leo men’s and women’s swim teams concluded the three-day Sarasota YMCA Tom Herrington Invitational in impressive fashion, as four previous individual records fell. The men, who raced as an unattached team, closed the weekend with a team score of 230 points and a 4th-place finish. The women also had a solid weekend in the pool, solidifying two school records and closing with a team score of 216.50 and a 6th-place finish.
In total, the men secured six first-place finishes and had two individuals break school marks in both the 200 Yard Breast Stroke and the 200 Yard Butterfly. The women were equally as impressive during the weekend stretch solidifying three, first-place victories and smashing two school records.
Kyle Gramm gave Saint Leo valuable early points with a first place win in the 100 Yard Freestyle (49.61). Matt Attal followed with a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 (1:48.48) and 500 Yard (4:51.49) Freestyle. Brian Kiessling and Travis VanBuren also had solid days in the pool, each recording a second-place showing.
But the weekend belonged to Tim Olson and Derek Maddigan as the pair combined for five, first-place finishes, as well as breaking two school records. Olson solidified his record in the 200 Yard Butterfly (1:55.37) as he finished the heat nearly six seconds ahead of the closest competitor and 10 seconds in front of the previous school record. Maddigan, on the other hand, was dominant in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:16.99) closing the contest over four seconds in front of all other swimmers while breaking the previous record which he also held.
Leading the charge for the women Erin Hotchkiss, as she closed competition with three first-place victories, one second-place and was responsible for both school records. First, Hotchkiss etched her name in the record book in the 1650 Yard Freestyle (18:27.58) and followed it up with a wire-to-wire win in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:14.52).
Alisha Adams continued to have a solid season, ripping off two, second-place finishes in the 100 Yard (1:04.47) and 200 Yard (2:13.33) Backstroke. And teammate Alicia Thompson missed a first-place finish by two seconds in the 50 Yard Freestyle (26.97).
