SAINT LEO, Fla. – After week full of competition, and another sport starting their season and adding nominees into the mix, women’s soccer player Hannah Beard and men’s swimmer Derek Maddigan have been named Saint Leo Athletes of the Week for the period ending October 25th.

Beard, the senior forward, propelled the Lions into a Sunshine State Conference tournament berth after she planted two goals, including the game-winner, in the Lions’ 3-1 win over Nova Southeastern on Saturday evening.  After being shut out in Saint Leo’s 1-0 double overtime loss to Florida Tech earlier in the week, Beard and the Lions hit the road again for a conference match with NSU that had the season on the line.  A loss in this contest and the Lions’ season would end without a chance to defend their tournament title; a win and SLU would host a first-round game.  The native of Liverpool, England scored twice in the second half as she planted the game’s second goal in the 72nd minute and then tallied her 12th goal of the season in the 83rd.  The win gave the Lions 12 points and sole possession of fourth-place in the SSC.

On the men’s side, Derek Maddigan had a solid day in the pool for the Lions. In the season-opening dual meet against Bluegrass Mountain Conference foe Florida Southern, the junior swimmer competed in three events.  He medaled in two of those competitions, including a third-place showing in the 200 Yard Individual Medley.  He concluded his evening with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, securing a time of 2:23.46, two seconds off of his personal best.

Both the Saint Leo men’s and women’s soccer teams will wrap up their 2009 regular season as they face archrival Tampa with the women traveling to Pepin Stadium on Wednesday night and the men face the Spartans on Thursday.  Saint Leo Volleyball, who moved to 13th in the nation in the latest AVCA poll, travels to South Florida this weekend to face Barry and Lynn on Friday and Saturday in Sunshine State Conference competition, and men’s and women’s swimming will travel to Rollins for a Bluegrass Mountain Conference clash on Halloween.
