Lions kick off highly anticipated 2014 campaign at home

SAINT LEO, Fla. (September 4, 2014) – The 17th-ranked Saint Leo men's soccer team is slated to open its 2014 campaign on Thursday evening against Spring Hill College.  Game time against the Badgers is set for 4:30 p.m.  This marks the first time the two teams will have met on the pitch.

Both Saint Leo and Spring Hill kick off their seasons Thursday night and enter into the contest with clean slates.  The Lions, who were picked to repeat as Sunshine State Conference champions, are currently ranked 17th on the NSCAA Division II Coaches Poll.

Led by Keith Fulk, who enters into his fourth season in the Green and Gold, the Lions return seven starters from last year's squad, who posted an overall record of 13-2-2 and 7-1-1 in SSC play as they claimed the regular season championship and entered into post season play for the first time since 2005.  Overall, Saint Leo welcomes back 14 players from last year's roster, and adds 13 new faces to the squad.

Spring Hill, who begins a new era on Thursday as they make the official move from NAIA into full DII standing, will be under the leadership of new head coach Matt Tanner.  In their final season in the NAIA's Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC), the Badgers posted an overall record of 6-11 and 3-8 in conference play.  Spring Hill returns 12 starters from last year's squad, and prepares for Gulf South Conference action with 13 seniors on its roster.

After Thursday night's season opener, the Lions return to action on Saturday, September 6, when they host No. 2 Carson Newman at University Field.  Game time against the Eagles is slated for 7:30 p.m.  Fans who cannot make it to the game will be able to follow all of the action live through Twitter, Live Stats, as well as live video on the Saint Leo Sports Network.
