SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men's soccer program has released the complete schedule for the approaching 2014 season. In total, the Lions will take to the pitch for 18 regular season matches, 10 of which will be played at University Field located on the Saint Leo campus.
Entering his sophomore season, forward Maximilian Schulze-Geisthovel will look to build off of his strong freshman campaign that saw 11 goals and a pair of assists to lead the team. Fellow forward Lukas Cramer returns for his senior season after scoring seven goals for the Lions in 2013.
Junior goalkeeper Manuel Schoenhuber will look to follow up his spectacular season which he amassed 66 saves and recorded six shut-outs en route to an All-SSC first team selection.
Prior to the start of the season, Saint Leo will play a pair of exhibition games against Florida Gulf Coast University and future Sunshine State Conference foe Embry-Riddle on Aug. 24 and Aug. 30 respectively.
The Green and Gold will host its season opener at home against Spring Hill College on Sept. 4 and will continue its homestand against Carson-Newman on Saturday Sept. 6th. Hitting the road for a neutral site contest on the campus of the University of Tampa, the Lions will meet Clayton State the following week on Sept. 13.
Saint Leo will meet a pair of regional opponents at home in the University of West Alabama and the University of West Florida, as the Gulf South Conference foes will head to University Field before the Lions begin conference play.
With four non-regional and two regional matches under their belts, Sunshine State Conference play will begin when the Lions travel to St. Petersburg to take on Eckerd for a midweek contest on Wednesday, Sep. 24. The squad will then return home for their SSC home opener against Nova Southeastern on Saturday, Sep. 27, followed by another home match against the cross-town rival and Coach Fulk's alma mater, the University of Tampa, on Sep. 30.
The month of October will feature eight matches for the Lions, though only five will count towards conference standings. Jumpstarting consecutive SSC road trips will be a journey to Melbourne, Fla., where the Lions will do battle with Florida Tech on Saturday, Oct. 4. Following that, the Green and Gold will head to Rollins College on Friday, Oct. 10 to face the Tars in what will certainly be a hard-fought match.
After a week's break from SSC play, Saint Leo will host the reigning Sunshine State Conference Tournament Champions when they compete against Barry University on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The final contests for the Lions will be played on the road, when Saint Leo makes the short trek to Lakeland, Fla. for a Tuesday night matchup against Florida Southern on Tuesday, Oc. 21, before rounding out their regular season with a Saturday trip to Lynn University on Oct. 25.
