SAINT LEO, Fla. – After 99 minutes of play, the No. 7 Saint Leo men's soccer team defeated the visiting Florida Tech Panthers in a thrilling overtime 3-2 win, Saturday night from University Soccer Field. The win improved the Lions' record to 12-1-1 on the season and furthered their postseason hopes.
The first goal of the night came well into the first half, when Maximilian Shulze-Geisthovel accepted a free kick pass from senior Edgar Herrera and punched the ball into the back of the Panthers' net to take a 1-0 lead 22 minutes into the match.
Less than two minutes later, Florida Tech tied the match at 1-1 when a Panthers corner kick resulted in a goal from Sam Sawyer.
After halftime and nearly twenty more minutes of play, Florida Tech seized an opportunity when the Panthers' Jack Wilson found himself situated away from the Saint Leo defense in the top left corner of the box and drove home a pass from Nicolas Dreyer to take a 2-1 lead.
With less than ten minutes left in the match, the Lions tied the game at 2-2 and kept their hopes alive. Senior Edgar Herrera collected his second assist of the game in the 82nd minute when he sent a solid pass to senior Chris Lavie, who blasted a rocket into the back of the Panthers' net. With the score tied, the Saint Leo and Florida Tech continued to fight until regulation time expired, sending them into a golden-goal overtime period.
With a 10 minute overtime clock winding down, the Lions pushed hard, forcing penalties and clock stoppage. In the 98th minute, Florida Tech's Ricky Menendez was issued a red card, forcing the Panthers' to plan one man down for the remainder of the match.
Just six seconds after the red card was issued, Saint Leo's Michael Panter sent a free kick assist to Shulze-Geisthovel, who pushed through the defense to send the ball past the diving Florida Tech goalkeeper for a thrilling overtime victory.
The match signaled the Lions' second overtime contest of the 2013 season.
The No. 7 Saint Leo men's soccer program will return to action on Tuesday, October 29 when they travel to Eckerd College to battle the Tritons. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
