No. 10 Lions Pick Up another Road Conference Victory; Dismantle Barry 2-0

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Saint Leo men's soccer team managed to collect another crucial Sunshine State Conference road victory as the Lions edged the host Barry Buccaneers 2-0 on Monday night.

The Lions (8-1-1, 2-0-1 SSC) scored twice on deflected goals for the win.

In the fifth minute, Edgar Herrera took a pass back from Henry Adu and ripped a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off a Barry defender and past the keeper into the goal.

In the 54th minute, Herrera and Michael Panter worked a combination on a free kick, with Herrera rolling the ball to Panter who blasted a shot from the right wing that skipped off the head of a defender and into the goal.

The Bucs had a couple of golden scoring chances, but were unable to spin the scoreboard. In the 25th minute, Nico Gercke had two shots point blank near the left post; the Lions keeper Manuel Schoenhuber stopped both.  In the 66th minute, Thomas Coombes had a shot blocked in the box and Schoenhuber just got fingertips on Gercke's attempt on the rebound. In the 74th minute, Patrick Drmola ripped a shot from just outside the box on which Schoenhuber made a diving save.

The Bucs (5-7-1, 2-2-0 SSC) held an 18-11 edge in shots, including 8-5 on goal, but Schoenhuber had eight saves to preserve the shutout.  This marks the sophomore's fifth clean sheet this season. Johnny Rodrigues had three saves for the Bucs.

The Lions return home and will face Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon.  The game, played on Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness, will be the second meeting between the Lions and Mocs, with Saint Leo claiming a 2-1 victory in the SSC +4 game on September 15.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at University Field.
