MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team (5-4) defeated the Barry University Buccaneers (3-8) by the final score of 4-2, Tuesday evening from Buccaneer Field.
The Lions, led by a three–goal first half, snapped a three-match losing streak as they upended the Buccaneers for the second time this season.
The scoring started early for the Lions as Konstantin Pyankov notched his first goal of the season. Bruno Da Silva fed the defender a direct ball from the six-yard box and slotted it inside the near post.
In his first game back from injury, Kyle Wilson put the Lions up 2-0 in the 29th minute, after collecting a rebound off an Edgar Herrera blast. Wilson settled the ball at his right foot and scorched the back of the net for his first tally.
Sean McFarlane closed-out the Lions' scoring in the first the half as his 30th minute as his 24-yard blast gave the Lions a 3-0 advantage. The Buccaneers made the lead 3-1 in the 31st minutes as Thomas Coombes capped a series where the two teams combined for three goals in three minutes.
Barry carried the momentum in the second half as Kris Wilkinson edged one past Manuel Schoenhuber to make the score 3-2.
Saint Leo settled play, however, as Da Silva broke from Buccaneer defenders and made a run down the center of the field. Staying onside, Da Silva collected a direct feed from Viktor Wikner and struck it past Fred Perez for the final tally in the 88th minute.
The defense withstood the final attack from Barry as the Lions' improved to 5-4. Schoenhuber made one save on the evening.
Saint Leo and Barry collected 13 shots apiece, while the two teams combined for 24 fouls and totaling four corner kicks apiece.
The Lions will now travel to Lakeland, Fla. to challenge the Florida Southern College Moccasins in a Sunshine State Conference showdown. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from Barnett Field.
