SAINT LEO, Fla. – In Saturday night Sunshine State Conference men's soccer action, Saint Leo (3-1-0, 1-1-0 SSC) edged Barry (1-3-0, 0-1-0) by a score of 1-0.
In a fairly quiet first half that saw each team feeling each other out for the first 30 minutes, the game took a swing in favor of Saint Leo when Aaron Gendreau retrieved his own rebound and blasted the ball into the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute.
In the second half, the Lions were able to preserve their first half lead, much to the help of Manuel Schoenhuber's exceptional goal keeping. The freshman keeper had five saves on the night as he improved his record to 3-1-0 on the year.
Although the Lions came away with the win, the Buccaneers outshot Saint Leo 16 to 10 on the night, with five of those being on target. The Lions' only two shots on goal came from Gendreau on the play in the 44th minute that resulted in the eventual game winner.
The Saint Leo men's soccer team gets back into action this coming Wednesday, Sep 19, at home against the University of Tampa. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
