SAINT LEO, Fla. – Head Men's Soccer Keith Fulk has announced his first two additions to the 2012 men's soccer team as the local talents of Matt Campbell and Josh Davis have signed National Letters of Intent to compete at Saint Leo University beginning in the fall of 2012.
Losing five players from the 2011 squad, both Campbell and Davis will assist the Lions immediately at the midfield and forward positions. In total, six NLI's, among others, will join the Lions' 17 returners as they get set to tackle a 15-match schedule, a slate which includes the new 'plus-one' schedule format.
"We're always looking to improve our team," said Fulk. "This class has us moving in the right direction."
Spring Hill, Fla.
F.W. Springstead High School
Campbell joins the Lions from Springstead High School where he competed under the guidance of Coach Sal Calabrese for four seasons. Compiling an outstanding high school resume, the 2011-12 team captain was selected to the All-North Suncoast First Team three of his four seasons. The incoming Biology Major truly shined during his senior year as he was named District 10 Player of the Year, as well as being tabbed a member of the FACA All-Star Team, and earning the Hernando County scoring title. He amassed 28 goals and seven assists for 63 points en route to that accolade.
Campbell was also a steady leader of the Hernando Heat Football Club where he was selected to attend Real Madrid's select training in Madrid, Spain in 2010.
Coach Fulk's Perspective: "Matt is a good athlete and will come in and make an mpact on our team. He is extremely fit and versatile. He plays with good pace and strikes a heavy ball. We know he was heavily recruited by multiple Division I schools, so we're expecting him to make an impact on the field and in the classroom."
Land O'Lakes High School
Davis, an incoming Sport Business major, was a standout player first for King High School and, most recently, Land O' Lakes High School. During his last two seasons with the Land O'Lakes Gators, Davis exploded for 51 goals, including a county-best 33 during his senior season. His efforts on the field earned him Offensive Player of the Year accolades, while guiding the team to the 3A State Final. His prior time at King HS saw him earn his first Offensive Player of the Year award as he notched a team-best 15 goals. In addition to his high school career, Davis also earned time with his club squad, the Brandon Flames.
Coach Fulk's Perspective: "Josh is a great athlete that will add speed up front or on the wing. He is a very dynamic player who will work hard on the field and in the classroom."
The Lions will get their first crack at an opponent when they open up their fall exhibition season on Saturday, August 18, against Division I Florida Gulf Coast.
