Valdez Secures SSC Defensive Player of the Week Honors

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Saint Leo defender Daniel Valdez has been selected Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by SSC Commissioner Jay Jones.

A native of Ecuador, Valdez anchored a Lions' defense that preserved a 1-0 SSC double-overtime shutout over Florida Tech. In 109 minutes of action, Valdez and his teammates permitted just two shots on goal for the Panthers. His sliding save in the 77th minute kept Tech off the scoreboard. Valdez also proved to be the offensive spark for Saint Leo, heading home the golden goal in the 109th minute.

Both of Valdez's goals this season have gone as game-winners.

Valdez is the first men's soccer player to earn Player of the Week accolades in 2011.

The Lions have one game remaining on the 2011 regular season slate as they will challenge archrival Tampa on Wednesday, October 26. Kickoff for the pivotal SSC contest is set for 7:00 p.m. For the latest news, updates, and information on the men's soccer team, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
