SAINT LEO, Fla. – After going undefeated in competition last week, both the Saint Leo men’s and women’s soccer teams have individuals who claimed Saint Leo Athlete of the Week awards with senior Leonardo Nogueira and sophomore Pia Soesemann earning the honor for the week ending October 12th.

Nogueira, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was all over the field in both men’s soccer games this week.  Although he did not tally a point in the Thomas University contest, his presence in the midfield forced the opponents to keep close watch, allowing numerous scoring opportunities from other players in the 7-1 win.  His biggest impact of the week came in the weekend Sunshine State Conference matchup with the nation’s former top-team in Lynn University.  With the score knotted at one, and after spending the majority of the match trying to help teammates connect on scoring opportunities, the senior found himself in the right place at the right time in the 88th-minute.  Standing in the middle of the box, Nogueira caught a cross from Daniel Asher with a beautiful scissor-kick that he deflected past the goalkeeper and into the net, scoring the deciding goal in the 2-1 upset.

Soesemann had a great week for the Green & Gold, positing three goals and six points en route to an undefeated week with wins over regional foes Palm Beach Atlantic and Lynn University.  In the 7-2 win against PBA in South Florida, the sophomore tallied the go-ahead, game-winning goal to help secure the victory.  Then, against SSC foe Lynn on Friday, the native of Berlin, Germany scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 81st-minute as the Lions posted the 4-2 win.  She managed to push SLU to the win despite playing with a badly bruised hamstring she suffered in the opening minute of the contest.

With cross country having the week off as they prepare for the Sunshine State Conference Championships in Lakeland, all three other teams see tough competition during the week.

Women’s soccer will head to Barry University on Tuesday evening before returning home for a Senior Night showdown with Florida Southern on Saturday night.  Men’s soccer, who’s schedule is the exact opposite of the women’s, will honor their departing seniors in their final home game against Florida Southern on Wednesday night before traveling to Barry on Saturday.

Volleyball has the week’s most interesting schedule as they face the 24th-ranked University of West Florida Argonauts at 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning, before traveling to Winter Park for a neutral-site match with Harding University on Saturday afternoon.
