Saint Leo, Fla. (October 17, 2007) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (8-4-2, 4-3 SSC) edged visiting Florida Southern College (5-8, 2-6 SSC) by a score of 5-4 in an overtime thriller at University Field on Wednesday night.
Saint Leo forward Eusebio Montoya (Jr., Smithfield, N.C.) scored his third career hat trick, which was rounded out with the extra time winner. Montoya added an assist in the win, while Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Mikael Angesjo (Sr., Gothenburg, Sweden) added a pair of assists, and Jonathan Glenn (Fr., Maloney Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) scores his 12th goal of the season.
The over and back affair saw the Moccasins erase a two-goal half-time deficit and take a pair of one-goal leads in the second half. However, the Lions got an equalizer by Montoya in the 90th minute to force extra-time. The Lions’ junior striker then sealed his hat trick with the game-winner, and his team-leading 14th goal of the campaign in the 98th minute.
The Lions led 2-0 at half-time thanks to a 21st minute goal by Montoya and a 25th minute strike from Glenn. Whitsett assisted on both goals.
However, the Mocs came back with three goals in just over 10-minutes to take a 3-2 lead. The Lions pulled even again when Leonardo Nogueira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored in the 87th minute only for an own goal to give the visitors the lead again in the 88th minute.
Montoya then delivered the equalizer with just 53 seconds remaining in regulation before scoring the winner 2:49 from the end of the first extra period.
Saint Leo will close out its home schedule on Saturday with a match against Flagler College. The Lions and Saints will kick-off at 1:00 p.m. at University Field.
