Saint Leo, Fla. (October 10, 2007) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (7-3-2, 3-2 SSC) fell 4-2 on the road to the University of Tampa (7-4, 3-2 SSC) on Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference match.
The Lions trailed from the start, as their five-match winning streak was snapped. Tampa scored two goals inside the first 16 minutes and managed to restore their two-goal lead twice more before winning by that margin.
Saint Leo pulled to within a goal at 2-1 in the 27th minute when Jonathan Glenn (Fr., Maloney Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season. A cross field pass from Eusebio Montoya (Jr., Smithfield, N.C.) was flicked down by Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and into the path of Glenn. The striker calmly flicked it beyond the Spartans goalkeeper to bring the Lions within one.
Tampa regained its two-goal lead in the 32nd minute when a cross from the left fell to substitute Ryan Maxwell. The striker fired a half-volley that caught the upper left corner and gave the home side a 3-1 lead, which they took into the locker room.
The Lions pulled another goal back early in the second half, as a cross from Luis Quintero (Sr., Cape Coral, Fla.) was headed home by Leonardo Nogueira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) for his third goal of the season. However, the Spartans once again restored their two-goal lead and provided the final margin when a free kick from Dan Ingvarsson was curled into the upper right corner.
The Lions will return home to face Lynn University in a Sunshine State Conference match on Saturday. The match will be the second half of an SSC doubleheader and will begin at 7:30 p.m.
