Saint Leo, Fla. (September 11, 2007) – Saint Leo University forward Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) scored two goals and added an assist to lift the men’s soccer team (2-1-2) to a 4-2 win over visiting Palm Beach Atlantic University (4-1) on Tuesday night at University Field.
The Lions also got a goal and two assists from freshman Jonathan Glenn (Maloney Garden, Trinidad & Tobago), while junior forward Eusebio Montoya (Smithfield, N.C.) added the game-winning goal and an assist in the match.
After a slow start, the game erupted to life with a goal for each side in the 32nd minute. Glenn’s strong run on the left resulted in a cross that was only punched by PBA goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak. Whitsett pounced on the rebound to give the home side the lead. However, just 42 seconds later a free kick for the Sailfish was deflected in by a Saint Leo defender for an own goal and the equalizer.
The score remained tied until the 74th minute when Whitsett picked up a pass from Glenn and then worked himself into a shooting position from the right side of the penalty area. The striker then curled a left-footed effort beyond the reach of Yurchak that nestled into the left corner of the net for a 2-1 Saint Leo lead.
The Lions made it 3-1 just 1:28 later when Whitsett turned provider for Montoya who slotted home for his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 75th minute.
PBA were awarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute and pulled a goal back when Cheyne Roberts scored from the spot. However, the Lions quickly regained their two-goal cushion just 17 seconds later when Montoya played a through ball for Glenn who calmly slotted beyond the reach of an oncoming Yurchak for his first career goal.
The Lions will open their Sunshine State Conference schedule on Saturday with a trip to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to face Nova Southeastern University. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
