Saint Leo, Fla. (September 2, 2007) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (1-1-1) saw its unbeaten start to the 2007 season come to an end with a 2-1 loss to the University of West Florida (3-1) at University Field on Sunday afternoon.
West Florida goalkeeper Juan Garcia made two penalty saves and striker Jimmy McHenry scored both of the visitor’s goals to give the Argonauts their third straight win. The Lions’ lone goal was scored by Leonardo Nogueira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil).
UWF opened the scoring in the 25th minute as a long kick out from Garcia was taken in stride by midfielder Rafael Segal. The lead was doubled inside of two minutes when McHenry spotted Saint Leo goalkeeper Griffin Pharr (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) off his line and sent a drive over the ‘keeper from 40-yards.
Nogueira pulled a goal back for the Lions in the 35th minute when he took a rebound and smashed it home from 10 yards out for his first goal of the campaign.
In the second half, the Lions were awarded a penalty kick in the 49th minute when Eusebio Montoya (Jr., Smithfield, N.C.) was taken down inside the area. Luis Quintero’s (Sr., Cape Coral, Fla.) resulting spot kick was saved by Garcia who then saved the follow-up effort.
