Saint Leo, Fla. (August 24, 2006) – The Saint Leo University men's soccer team (1-0) opened its 2006 season with a 5-1 win over visiting Briar Cliff University (0-1) on Thursday night at University Field in Saint Leo, Fla.

Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Luis Quintero (Jr., Cape Coral, Fla.) scored two goals each to lead the Lions to the season-opening victory.  Eusebio Montoya (So., So., Smithfield, N.C.) scored the other goal, while Briar Cliff's Joe Florke scored the lone goal for the visitors.

The Lions got their season off to a fast start with two goals inside the first five minutes of the contest.  Quintero opened the scoring in the third minute when his deflected effort sailed beyond Briar Cliff goalkeeper Buddy Goodenkauf.  The lead was doubled just two minutes later when Goodenkauf was unable to handle a cross from Montoya, and Whitsett was on the spot to tap in the rebound for his first goal of the new campaign.

A penalty by Montoya ended the scoring the first half, as SLU went into the half-time locker room with the three-goal cushion.

Another penalty was awarded to the Lions in the 58th minute when Montoya was taken down, as he attempted to round the Chargers' ‘keeper.  Quintero converted the resulting spot kick for his second goal of the night.

The Chargers pulled a goal back in the 71st minute when Florke scored on a long-range effort, but Whitsett ensured the win with his second goal of the night.   The striker took a nice feed from striker Mikael Angesjo (Jr., Gothenburg, Sweden) and fired beyond the reach of Goodenkauf to close the scoring in the 81st minute.

The Lions men's soccer team will return to action this Sunday when it hosts Thomas University in the second half of a doubleheader, which will also feature the SLU women versus the Thomas women.  Kick-off for the men's match is slated for 5:00 p.m. at University Field.
