Saint Leo, Fla. (October 10, 2006) – Sophomore forward Eusebio Montoya’s (Smithfield, N.C.) second half hat trick propelled the Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (9-4-1, 3-1-1 SSC) to a 6-0 win over visiting Southeastern University on Tuesday night in a non-conference match played at University Field. The win stretched SLU’s unbeaten run to six matches.
Montoya’s second career hat trick was scored in a seven-minute span of the second half to open up a big lead after the Lions led 1-0 at half-time through Leo Nogueira’s (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) first career goal in the 13th minute. Senior Brandon Jones (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Chris Daly (New Port Richey, Fla.) rounded out the scoring for the Lions.
Montoya assisted on the Nogueira first half strike and then took center stage, as he stretched the Saint Leo lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later he was on the score sheet again when he fired a tight angle shot beyond the reach of Fire goalkeeper Bart Sheldrake. The sophomore then completed his hat trick with a sensational scissor kick strike into the upper left corner after juggling the ball up to himself.
Jones and Daly added their goals in the 63rd and 74th minutes, respectively to cement the victory. Saint Leo goalkeepers Sam Luedke (Jr., Deltona, Fla.) and Joey Gandolfo (So., Davie, Fla.) combined for the shutout in goal.
Saint Leo returns to Sunshine State Conference action this Friday night when the Lions welcome Eckerd College to University Field. The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Internet via the Saint Leo Athletics Audiocast Network.
