Lions Rout Lenoir-Rhyne 20-5 in Key Conference Victory

HICKORY, N.C. – The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team ran out to a five goal lead and never looked back as the Lions routed the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears by a score a 20-5 on Friday evening in Hickory, N.C. The win advances the Lions' record to 6-2, and 4-1 in conference play, while the Bears drop to a mark of 4-4, and 2-1 in DSC action.
Leading the Lions on the night was Matt Obermeyer with four goals. Robert Hutchinson matched Obermeyer in points with three goals and an assist, and was joined by Chris Caiazza who posted two goals and two assists. A total of 13 players contributed to the Lions' scoring efforts on the evening.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led in goals by Tyler Koch with two, while Imari Davis led the team in overall points with a goal and two assists.
The Green and Gold ran out to a quick five-goal lead while holding the Bears off of the scoreboard until the 3:59 mark. Saint Leo posted one more goal in the first quarter to hold onto a dominant 6-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
The second-stanza was just as dominant as the first for the Lions. Saint Leo outscored the Bears 7-2 to enter into the halftime break with a 13-3 advantage.
Lenoir-Rhyne opened the third quarter with their only goal of the period, but the Lions posted two more goals to close the period with a 15-4 lead. The fourth quarter was much like the rest, with Saint Leo outscoring their conference opponent by a score of 5-1 to close out the game with a final tally of 20-5 in the Lions' favor.
The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, March 23, when they host Wingate University in DSC action. Game time against the Bulldogs is slated for 1 p.m. at University Turf Stadium.
