Three Lions Named All-Deep South Conference

WINGATE, N.C. – Three Lions have been named to the 2012 All-Deep South Conference Team, league officials announced Tuesday morning.  Matt Obermeyer, George Proechel, and Ray Ferrara have all been given a nod on this year's team for their efforts throughout the 2012 campaign.

Saint Leo sophomore attackman Matt Obermeyer earned First Team All-Deep South Conference honors.  The Winter Springs, Fla. native has racked up a team high 37 goals, and has added four assists for 41 points overall.  Obermeyer has also collected 17 ground balls and four caused turnovers.  He currently leads the conference in goals per game with 3.08.  This marks the initial First Team accolade for Obermeyer, which he adds to his DSC Freshman of the Year honor from 2011.

Proechel gets his second straight nod on the All-DSC Second Team, marking the third consecutive year the Orlando, Fla. native has been named an All-Conference selection.  The junior attackman leads the team in overall points, having tallied 36 goals and 15 assists for 51 points.  Proechel sits second on the team in goals scored, and leads the Green and Gold in assists, and has collected 18 ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Proechel finished fourth in the conference with 51 points, ranking third in the league with 36 goals and seventh with 15 assists.

Ferrara earns his first ever nod to an All-DSC team, getting a second team selection for his junior year.  The Potomac, Md. native currently sits fourth on the team in goals scored with 14, and has added three assists for 17 points overall.  The middie has also grabbed 13 ground balls  and six caused turnovers in his time on the field.

Overall, Mars Hill senior attackman T.J. Cowx took home the coveted 2012 Deep South Conference Player of the Year honors.  Fellow teammate Taylor Thilo has been named DSC Freshman of the Year, while Rory Whipple gets the nod for Coach of the Year.

Cowx led the DSC with 40 goals in 2012, while ranking fifth in the league with 19 assists. He led the Lions to a 7-1 mark in league play, helping Mars Hill earn a share of the regular season title. Cowx led the conference with 59 points and an average of 4.54 points per game. He had 23 goals and 13 assists in conference games, notching a league-best 36 points in DSC action.

Thilo piled up 30 goals and 23 assists in his freshman season to help lead the Lions to a share of the regular season title. He finished the regular season ranked second in the DSC with 54 points, while also finishing second in assists and sixth in goals.

Whipple guided the Spartans to an impressive 11-4 record in the program's first season. Tampa went 7-1 in the DSC, sharing the regular season conference title. Whipple guided the Spartans to victories in the first three games in the program's history, which included two conference wins and two road victories.

The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, April 10, when they travel to Florida Southern to take on the Mocs in the first round of the conference tournament.  Game time against Florida Southern is slated for 7 p.m. at Bryant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla.  Fans will be able to follow the action live at, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.
