HICKORY, NC – The Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team was surprised by the host Lenoir-Rhyne Bears as the Lions dropped a 10-8 decision in Deep South Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Tyler Kotch led Lenoir-Rhyne with a team-high three goals while freshman Anthony Mangili scored twice and freshman Robert Darrow added a goal and dished out three assists for the Bears.
Saint Leo's George Proechel led all scorers with four goals while Dustin Goss tallied four assists for the Lions in the losing effort.
In a game with a flow very similar to some of the Lions’ previous contests, Saint Leo (5-6, 2-3 DSC) held an early lead but saw the host Bears steal the lead back and the Lions would spend the remainder of the game playing catch-up.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s (4-8, 2-4 DSC) Luke Nealon broke an eight-all tie with the game-winner with 3:39 remaining in the contest. Kotch rounded out the scoring with his third goal on the afternoon with 36 seconds left in the final stanza.
Freshman Patrick Stasio picked up the win in goal after stopping 16 shots for Lenoir-Rhyne, which came back to win after falling behind by a 2-0 score midway through the second period.
Saint Leo's goalkeeper, Patrick Berry, made eight saves in the losing effort. The Lions also fell despite holding a 48-29 edge in shots taken.
The Lions will return home from another long trip to North Carolina and get ready to host Florida Southern on April 9th. The game will serve as the Lions’ annual Senior Day as it also marks the final regular season game. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. with Senior Day ceremonies to commence prior to the game.
