MARS HILL, NC – Tim Burns scored six goals to lead 12th-ranked Mars Hill past Saint Leo by an 18-8 final in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Friday night in Western North Carolina. Mars Hill improves to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while Saint Leo falls to 5-5 and 2-2 in the league.
After jumping out to an early lead at both 1-0 and 2-1, Saint Leo was unable to prevent the Mars Hill rally as the MHC Lions outscore the Green and Gold 5-1 for the rest of the half to jump out to a 6-3 lead at halftime. The hosts outscored SLU 12-5 in the second half as they put the game away in their favor.
Mars Hill outshot Saint Leo 43-28 and won the ground ball count 41-31. Saint Leo had 27 turnovers compared to only 18 for Mars Hill.
Matt Obermeyer led Saint Leo with three goals as he continues to impress despite his team’s struggles. Patrick Berry tallied 15 saves in goal for SLU.
Tyler Farmer added five goals for Mars Hill. T.J. Cowx and Chris Cudmore had three and two goals, respectively. Eric Benesch recorded three assists. Dylan Price made eight saves.
Saint Leo will remain in North Carolina for the weekend as they look to rebound with a Sunday Deep South Conference game against conference newcomer Lenoir-Rhyne. The Lions and the Bears will get underway at noon on Sunday in Hickory, NC.
