WINGATE, NC – Saint Leo University sophomore attack George Proechel is this week’s Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon. Saint Leo sophomore goalie Patrick Berry is the Defensive Player of the Week, while the Lions' Matt Obermeyer is the Freshman of the Week.
Proechel had a huge game against Notre Dame de Namur, notching four goals and two assists to lead the Lions to a 12-11 victory. Proechel’s day included scoring the game-winner in overtime to give Saint Leo the victory. He also scored with 31 seconds remaining in regulation for the Lions. Proechel took nine shots on the day, while collecting six ground balls.
Berry racked up 13 saves for the Lions in the 12-11 overtime victory. He faced a total of 35 shots on the day, and had a save percentage of .542 while collecting three ground balls. Berry also came up with a key save in the overtime period to help the Lions improve to 3-1 on the season.
Obermeyer netted three goals in Saint Leo’s win over Notre Dame de Namur. He scored twice in the opening period, including the final goal of the opening frame which gave the Lions a 6-3 lead. Obermeyer added a goal in the third to put the Lions on top by two. He took 11 shots on the day, while collecting a pair of ground balls.
After sweeping the awards, the Lions will continue action within the Deep South Conference when they welcome Wingate University to University Field for a mid-week contest. The Lions and Bulldogs will get underway on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. on the Saint Leo campus.
