SALISBURY, N.C. – Kyle Marceau scored five goals and Luke Baruch added four to lead eighth-ranked Saint Leo to a 16-5 win over host Catawba in Deep South Conference lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium on the Catawba campus. The Lions improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the DSC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-2 and 0-1.
Baruch scored a pair of goals nine seconds apart just over five minutes into the game and the Lions never looked back. Saint Leo led 5-0 before the Indians got a goal with 11 seconds left before the end of the first quarter. Baruch scored all four of his goals in the first half as the Lions took a 10-2 lead at the break. Braden Artem had both of Catawba’s goals in the opening 30 minutes.
Marceau scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half and Saint Leo led 16-3 after three quarters. Catawba had the lone tallies of the last quarter, coming in the final five minutes.
David Erdman stopped seven shots over three quarter in goal for the Lions. Patrick Berry handled duties in the fourth quarter and posted six saves. Josh Liptak played the final 19 minutes for Catawba and stopped all seven Lion shots on goal.
Headed back to the Saint Leo campus after six days in North Carolina, the Lions will finally open their home schedule against St. Andrews Presbyterian on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The game with the Knights marks the first of six consecutive home contests on the friendly turf of University Field.
